In 1879 in the town of Widdikaka CO. a blacksmith called John Pope was hanged for a crime he did not commit. 'Old Pop John' (or 'The Hammer Stammer' as he was known because of his extensive speech impediment) was the only person one night who witnessed the shooting of Sheriff P. Colgan by Aisha Hoolihan, the sister of Ben Hoolihan who was jailed by Colgan previously for illicit behaviour with a sheep. When asked if anyone witnessed the shooting, John Pope shouted out, "Aisha shot the sheriff". Unfortunately because of his stammer, the crowd heard this as "I sh - shot the sheriff" and took this to be a confession and Old Pop John was hanged the next morning. It is rumoured Aisha Hoolihan took over John's blacksmithy business and made her fortune selling little souvenir momentos of the famous 'Shooting of Sheriff P. Colgan by John Pope'. How IRON-ic.
